Ecce! In Italy, the Internet Is Getting a Bill of Rights

It’s a document that might have intrigued James Madison, and perhaps
even garnered another statesman’s iconic, oversized signature.
Italian lawmakers have introduced the “Dichiarazione dei diritti in
Internet” — or, “Draft Declaration of Internet Rights” — a tentative
blueprint for keeping the Internet an open and democratic platform.

“This Declaration of Internet Rights is founded on the full
recognition of the liberty, equality, dignity and diversity of every
individual,” the document’s introduction reads. The preamble
continues, outlining a need to combat online “surveillance, control
and social selection.”
