7amleh - The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media has published a research contribution by Sarah Fathallah titled “Captive Voices: Algorithmic Voice Surveillance in Palestine.” The paper examines how Palestinians’ voice communications are intercepted, stored, and algorithmically analysed within the Israeli occupation’s system of surveillance and control.
The paper traces the flow of voice data, from the capture of calls and conversations to their storage, processing, and use in intelligence and military operations, highlighting the role of technology companies and cloud service providers in enabling this system. It also examines the impact of voice surveillance on Palestinians’ privacy, freedom of expression, and everyday lives, as well as pathways for holding the actors involved accountable.
The contribution is part of Digital Domination: AI, Surveillance, and Digital Power in Palestine and Beyond, published by 7amleh in collaboration with the Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies at Birzeit University.
