Il 24 settembre alle ore 14.30 presso, l’Aula Magna del
Politecnico di Milano, il Tech and Law Center è lieto di avere
come ospite Susan Landau con una lezione dal titolo
“Surveillance or Security? The Risks Posed by New Wiretapping
Technology”. Durante l’incontro, Susan Landau presenterà alcuni
dei temi trattati nella sua recente pubblicazione in tema di
sorveglianza elettronica evidenziando l’interazione tra privacy,
cybersecurity e public policy. Le nuove tecnologie di
sorveglianza elettronica, infatti, non si scontrano solo con il
problema della privacy, ma anche con quello della sicurezza
informatica che sempre più spesso viene penalizzata dalle
politiche del “controllo” sviluppate a livello nazionale e
internazionale. I risultati dei suoi studi dimostrano, inoltre,
come le intercettazioni telefoniche e telematiche abbiano, in
termini di costi/benefici, un'efficacia limitata e come la
crittografia non costituisca una reale soluzione per tutelare la
privacy degli utenti. Questi ed altri interessanti spunti
costituiranno la base per il dibattito successivo coordinato da
Stefano Zanero, Francesca Bosco e Giuseppe Vaciago.
Susan Landau è attualmente Visiting Scholar al Computer Science
Department della Harvard University. Ha relazionato più volte il
Congresso degli Stati Uniti su temi legati alle nuove tecnologie
tra cui i Digital Right Management (DRM), la sicurezza
informatica e la privacy nei sistemi di identificazione
digitale. Susan Landau ha ricoperto ruoli di grande prestigio
all’interno di Sun Microsystem tra il 1999 e il 2010. Prima di
questa esperienza è stata docente di computer science alla
University of Massachusetts e alla Wesleyan University. È stata
coautrice di “Privacy on the Line” con Whitfield Diffie e la sua
ultima pubblicazione “Surveillance or Security? The Risks Posed
by New Wiretapping Technology”, edita da MIT Press, è stata
premiata come miglior libro dell’anno dal Surveillance Studies
Network. Susan Landau è anche membro del National Research
Council Computer Science and Telecommunications Board ed è nel
comitato scientifico della National Science Foundation's
Directorate for Computer and Information Science and
Engineering.

On 24 September at 14.30 at the Aula Magna of Politecnico di
Milano, Tech and Law Center is pleased to have as a guest Susan
Landau with a talk on “Surveillance or Security? The Risks Posed
by New Wiretapping Technology”. During the event, Susan Landau
will present some of the issues raised in her recent publication
on the subject of electronic surveillance, highlighting the
interplay between privacy, cybersecurity and public policy. The
new technologies of electronic surveillance, in fact, not only
collide with the issue of privacy, but also with that of
security, that is increasingly being penalized by the policies
of "control" developed at national and international level. The
results of her studies also demonstrate how wiretapping has, in
terms of cost / benefit, limited efficacy and how encryption is
not a real solution to protect users' privacy. These and other
interesting ideas will form the basis for the following debate
coordinated by Stefano Zanero, Francesca Bosco and Giuseppe
Vaciago. Susan Landau is a Visiting Scholar in the Computer
Science Department at Harvard University. She has briefed
Congress on a variety of issues, including digital rights
management and security and privacy of digital identity systems.
Landau was a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems from
1999 to 2010; before that, she taught computer science at the
University of Massachusetts and Wesleyan University. She is the
coauthor, with Whitfield Diffie, of "Privacy on the Line: the
Politics of Wiretapping and Encryption" (MIT Press, 1998;
revised 2007). Her book "Surveillance or Security? The Risks
Posed by New Wiretapping Technologies" has been awarded the
annual book prize by the Surveillance Studies Network.
