Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have blocked location-data analytics platform Geofeedia from access to their data after it was revealed that some law enforcement agencies were tracking activists and protesters via the platform, according to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Northern California.

 

Geofeedia collects real-time, publicly available, social media data based on geographic locations. And although the company openly markets this data to a range of public and private businesses, including 500 law enforcement and public safety agencies, the issue for Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter arose after the ACLU noted conflicts between the three social media companies’ privacy policies and the sharing of user data.  …. In 2015, 90% of US smartphone owners used location-based services for directions, recommendations, or other information, according to Pew Research.

Le forze dell'ordine statunitensi hanno sfruttato il sistema di monitoraggio della startup Geofeedia per reperire dati su manifestanti, seguirne gli spostamenti ed entrare prontamente in azione. È ora che Facebook, Twitter, Instagram vietino queste intrusioni. Il monito è dell'ACLU

Roma - L'ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) del Nord Carolina ha reso noto di aver ottenuto dei documenti che testimoniano come Twitter, Facebook e Instagram abbiano fornito accesso ai dati degli utenti a una società di social media monitoring. Si tratta di Geofeedia, proprietaria di una piattaforma che sarebbe stata impiegata in accordo con le autorità per identificare e seguire gli spostamenti di chi ha partecipato a manifestazioni di protesta in molto luoghi del Paese.
