Public Policy Lab EMEA This event will be webcast live: http://nexa.polito.it/upcoming-events In the Internet of Things (IoT), defined by Wikipedia as “the interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing devices within the existing Internet infrastructure”, the boundaries between physical space and cyberspace are getting blurred and products (physical) and services (digital) become one. In occasion of the 26th Nexa Lunch Seminar, Hanne Melin, Director Global Public Policy and Head of eBay Inc. Public Policy Lab EMEA, will discuss the change of the concept of “ownership” in an IoT world. The policy and governance challenge should be re-framed, redefining the consumer interests, rights, and power, mapping at the same time the commercial interests and power in the IoT domain. In this context, in fact, the physical dimension is determined and controlled by the digital one, which, in turn, is controlled by the entity governing the data. For these reasons, we need to answer specific questions: which are the economic interests already at play, and which are expected to enter the game soon? Which are the implications of current business models and software and infrastructure design choices? What are the policy and technology tools for balanced rights and empowerment? And finally, what can we do –as citizens, as firms, as research centers– to influence this process? HANNE MELIN heads the EMEA arm of eBay Inc.’s newly created Public Policy Lab where she develops strategy and vision for policy and legislation fit for a technology-enabled and globally connected economy and society. Prior to joining eBay, Hanne was an associate at the law firm Sidley Austin LLP, where she practiced competition law for five years in Brussels. Hanne is a guest lecturer at the law faculty of Lund University (Sweden) and a member of the European Commission’s Strategic Policy Forum on Digital Entrepreneurship. She has written for many legal journals on the topic of online commerce and she is a frequent speaker on the topic of trade policy in the digital economy.In addition to an LLM from Lund University, Hanne holds a Master in International Business Law from King’s College London.
