June 3rd, 3-4pm CET: webinar Legal frictions for AI training data openness
Dear colleagues of the NoC, The Centre for Internet and Society of the CNRS (CIS-CNRS) is organising a webinar on Tuesday 3 June 2025, from 15:00 to 16:00 (CET), to discuss findings from a research case-study on the reuse of publicly-available data for training foundation AI models. The webinar is organised by Ramya Chandrasekhar (CIS-CNRS https://cis.cnrs.fr/en/ramya_chandrasekhar/), with the participation of Mélanie Dulong de Rosnay (CIS-CNRS https://cis.cnrs.fr/en/melanie_dulong/), Inno3 (a Paris-based consulting firm working on sustainable open strategies https://inno3.fr/), and the Open Knowledge Foundation https://okfn.org/. During the webinar, presenters will discuss copyright and data protection issues arising from reuse of openly licensed data and content from the open web for training foundation AI models, synthesised from a repository of 41 ongoing legal controversies from multiple jurisdictions. The presenters will also discuss new licensing initiatives for training data, that are relevant for reciprocity and sustainability. Join us for a timely discussion on legal strategies to protect, grow and sustain the commons in the face of AI advancements, which are crucial for participative governance of AI as well. → Register for the webinar here: https://evento.renater.fr/survey/webinar-legal-frictions-for-ai-training-dat... → Read the full report prepared by CIS-CNRS in collaboration with Inno3 and the Open Knowledge Foundation here: https://cis.cnrs.fr/en/legal-frictions-for-data-openness-pub/ Looking forward to discussing with many of you, Kind regards, Ramya & Melanie -- Center for Internet and Society, CNRS, Paris CNRS Research Unit and Network on Internet, AI and Society https://cis.cnrs.fr/en/the-cis/
