Dear NoC Colleagues,
We hope you are all doing well.
We are thrilled to welcome five new centers from Africa, Asia and North America to the Global Network of Internet and Society Centers. The work undertaken by these centers is not only innovative but also provides valuable insights for NoC colleagues around the world:
Center for Digital Society <https://digitalsociety.id/en/> at the Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia The Center for Digital Society focuses on the socio-political impacts of digitalization and technological advancement on society. Building on a decade of experience, CfDS now concentrates on three key areas: cyberdemocracy and new governance, human-in-the-loop in artificial intelligence, and green technology for sustainable development.
GW Center for Law & Technology: The Bernard Center <https://www.law.gwu.edu/center-law-and-technology> at George Washington Law School, United States of America The GW Bernard Center is focused on the legal treatment of technology under U.S. law and the application of new and existing laws to artificial intelligence. The center examines the ways in which U.S. law can properly balance individuals' rights to speak freely online with government and platforms' interests in (and duty of) reducing hate speech, terrorist recruitment, and online misinformation.
Kyoto University Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Law and Policy <https://cislp.law.kyoto-u.ac.jp/en/>, Japan The Kyoto University Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Law and Policy is committed to conducting interdisciplinary and international research on cutting-edge legal policy issues. The purpose of this Center is to contribute to the development of legal policy frameworks that foster innovation, while also promoting the growth of new academic fields and the cultivation of creative leaders in these areas.
Policy Innovation Lab <https://policyinnovationlab.sun.ac.za/> at Stellenbosch University, South Africa The Policy Innovation Lab focuses on the use of AI to improve policy making in South Africa. The center operationalise this focus by prototyping AI tools, developing AI training and supporting AI usage readiness in the public sector
Stern Center for Business and Human Rights <https://bhr.stern.nyu.edu/> at New York University, United States of America The Stern Center for Business and Human Rights has a general focus on business and human rights. One of the center’s programs delves in technology and democracy, exploring ways to reduce harms associated with social media, artificial intelligence, online gaming, and 3D immersive platforms.
We look forward to fostering collaboration with these new centers and advancing the goals outlined in the 2024–2026 NoC Roadmap as the Network continues to grow!
Best regards,
Armando – On behalf of the NoC Secretariat.
